Michael Franzese was once known as a young, rich, and powerful Mafia boss.  He was once captain of the Colombo family, a family known for it’s ties to the mob.

A movie telling Michael’s story is going to be coming out at the end of the month.

As I watched the trailer for the movie, I was intrigued by Michael’s story.  During an interview in the movie, Michael Franzese remembers how he first got started with the mafia.

Michael: “He asked me one question, ‘If you ever had to kill anybody, would you do it?’  I thought about it for a minute and I said, ‘Yeah I think I can do it.'”

Michael had everything he thought he could ever want; money, power, and fame.

He was following in his dad’s footsteps, living the life of a mobster.

But it all came crashing down when Franzese was arrested by the FBI on racketeering charges.

He went from living in a mansion to living in a jail cell.

Little did Franzese know that his life was going to drastically change.

This is the story of one man’s radical journey of being a follower of the mafia, to being a follower of Christ.

Franzese’s story is adapted for the being screen in a movie titled, God The Father, and it’s opening on October 31.

I haven’t seen the movie yet, but I’m almost positive that I’m going to watch it, and I’ll take an unbelieving friend with me.

So watch the two-minute God The Father trailer, and then read my five reasons why I think you should watch the movie too, and take an unbelieving friend with you.

5 Reasons Why You Should Watch God The Father With an Unbelieving Friend

1. Encourage Your Faith

While I haven’t seen the movie yet, it does look to be pretty promising after you watch the trailer.

But since it’s in the format of a testimony, you can be sure that the movie is going to encourage your faith.

If God can touch the hardest of hearts like in the case of Michael Franzese, then God can touch any friend or family member that isn’t saved yet.

So consider praying about who you can take to watch this movie with you.

2. Equip You For Evangelism

This movie is going to help you with evangelism.

All you have to do is invite a friend or family member to see the movie with you. Then just let God work through the story that unfolds on the big screen.

You’ll be surprised at how God can use a movie to bring people to Christ.  It’s a very effective tool to reach the lost.

Some people have gotten saved because of these types of movie testimonies, and others have had gospel seeds planted in their hearts.

I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the increase

 3. Educate Skeptics

Every time that I’ve taken a skeptical friend of mine to see an evangelistic movie or event, they’ve always commented afterwards by saying, “Wow, I had no idea!”

The comment usually has to do with something about God or Christianity.

Skeptics almost always have the wrong idea about the Christian faith.

You can be sure that taking an unbelieving friend with you to see this movie is going to educate them about God in some kind of way.

It’ll be planting a gospel seed that God will water down the road.

4. Establish Spiritual Conversations

Starting a conversation about spiritual things with an unbeliever isn’t always easy.

While, I’ve given you tips in the past about how to start a conversation with a complete stranger, watching this movie is a great way to open the door for spiritual conversations.

Not only can the movie lead to a spiritual conversation right after watching it, but it can also lead to a bunch of more spiritual conversations in the future.

The reason is once you and your friend have talked about spiritual things, then you’ve established a spiritual foundation for your friendship.

Your unbelieving friend is likely to feel comfortable asking you about spiritual questions in the future.

5. Enrich Your Friendship

If I were to ask you to think of one person that you’d consider to be a good friend, who would be the first person that comes to your mind?

Take a few seconds to think of that person now.

Why do you consider that person to be a good friend of yours?

More than likely, the answer might be because that person is caring, loving, or helpful in some way.

When you take an unbelieving friend to see the God The Father movie, hopefully you’ll end up having a spiritual conversation with your friend.

Your friendship with your friend is going to be enriched because you now can talk to them about the deeper things of life.

You’ll likely think of them as a better friend, and they’ll feel the same way about you.

So if you’re into friendship evangelism, then the God The Father movie is a great outreach tool.

  1. This is impressive, a man of unparalleled violence and crime comes to Christ. This just goes to show that all can be saved and what you have done does not matter when you lay it before the Father. I love stories like this, the Lord’s mercies never end. A person’s sin may be great, but the grace of God is greater still.

    Thanks for sharing Peter. 🙂

    1. Amen to that Greg, I agree with everything that you said 🙂

Have you ever heard of him before? I never had heard of him but then after I wrote this blog post, a lot of people wrote to me on social media and told me that they heard his testimony in person. They said it’s quite riveting.

      1. No I hadn’t, he sounds like a very interesting individual. It often seems like the ones who have done so much wrong, caused so much harm are some of the best witnesses for Christ. Those who are forgiven much, love much. 🙂

  3. I never heard of this guy before. He has a very compelling story. You convinced me to pray Peter, and He convinced me to take a friend to see it. Thanks for sharing this.

    1. You’re welcome Kurt, I’m glad the Lord showed you who you should take 🙂 I’ll be praying for you and your friend.

As for Michael’s story, I was in the same boat as you. I had never heard of the guy either but then I came across his story online, and it was very compelling.

Hope you have a great weekend Kurt 🙂
