How to Overcome Procrastination and Share the Gospel Today

Have you ever wanted to do something but you just kept putting it off until the next day? What was the end result? I bet that you just kept on postponing that task or project until you either got it done way later than expected or you never got around to doing it at all.

How do I know this? Because I’ve fallen into this trap many times before.

A Lesson Learned from Dieting

I remember back in 2003, I promised myself that I was going to go on a diet. I wasn’t really happy with my physical condition and I knew that I could definitely lose some weight. So I would look in the mirror and being unsatisfied with my physique, I would say, “I’m going to go on a diet. I think I’m gonna do it tomorrow.”

Tomorrow would come, I would look in the mirror again, and repeat my routine. After a few times of doing this, I would forget about my noble intention of losing weight for a few months.  Then on a random day, I would look into the mirror again and realize that I had never done anything about my weight loss goal and that my body was still it’s same blobby self 🙁 .

Finally one day, I decided to do something about it. I decided that I was going to change my body and I was going to take matters into my own hands. I began to alter my eating habits and I began to exercise. I got myself motivated, I found a routine, and I stuck with it. Within 10 months, I lost 80 pounds!

I know, I was a big guy 🙂 .

So when did I actually begin to lose the weight? I didn’t start taking action until 2005. I procrastinated for a whole 2 years!  That’s 2 years of my life that I could have experienced better health, better sleep, and less pain.

Is there something in your life that you’ve been wanting to do but have been delaying?  Think about how long it’s been since you first wanted to do this thing you’ve been putting off.

I think that many of us have fallen into this trap when it comes to sharing the gospel with others. We say things like:

[sws_blockquote align=”” alignment=”” cite=”Excuses I’ve used before” quotestyles=”style01″]I’m going to share the gospel with someone soon but I have to become a better communicator first.

I have to study the Bible more before I could ever share the Good News with somebody.[/sws_blockquote]

There are so many excuses that we come up with for not sharing the gospel with others.  However, one thing is for sure: if we are going to overcome procrastination and preach the gospel then we’re going to need to identify why we procrastinate.

1)  You have fears

Maybe you’re afraid of preaching the gospel. Maybe you’re afraid of failure, rejection, or opposition.  I know that I’ve had all of these fears and that I constantly have to fight against it.

I’ve found that the solution is very simple: commit this Bible verse into memory and repeat it whenever you experience fear:

[sws_blockquote align=”” alignment=”” cite=”2 Timothy 1:7″ quotestyles=”style01″]For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind [/sws_blockquote]

Nothing destroys fear like the amazing and powerful Word of God 🙂 .

2) Your priorities aren’t set correctly

Healthy Christians have their priorities set in this order:

  1. God
  2. Family
  3. Everything else

If your priority list doesn’t look like this, then may I kindly suggest that you make the change as soon as possible.  You’ll be blessed beyond belief.  Also, check out this very cool video by Scott Williams.

3) Are you a Spirit-filled Christian?

There is power available to every believer who asks. Jesus promised the disciples that they would be baptized with the Holy Spirit in Acts 1.  In Acts 1:8 it says:

[sws_pullquote_left]But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth. [/sws_pullquote_left] [sws_picture_frame50 src=”” title=”baptism” alt=”baptism” align=”sws_frame_right” lightbox=”1″ album=”” video=””] [/sws_picture_frame50]

Sometimes our lack of desire to share the gospel with others is a result of not being filled with the Holy Spirit. But the solution to this is so simple: all we have to do is ask our heavenly father to fill us with thee Holy Spirit and He will do it gladly.

In your opinion, what do you think is the number one cause why Christians don’t share the gospel with others? Please share your answer in the comments section below. It’s easy and you can use your Facebook, Twitter, Google+, or e-mail account to leave a comment.
