Why should anyone believe in God? Are there really any good reasons to? I think the answer to that is unequivocally yes!

Should anyone believe in God because of what I say? No…but what God says is another matter altogether.

I know that there are many people who give the excuse that we shouldn’t believe in God because we can’t see Him.

However, while God may not let us see Him directly, He has left us tons of evidence that He’s real and that He does exist.

A Slice Of My Pie

My parents divorce

My parents divorce when I was a boy caused me to walk away from God

Please allow me to share with you a bit about my story.

I believed in God as a child, enjoyed church most of the time, and I loved going to Vacation Bible School.

Then one day out of the blue, my parents sat my brother and I down, and they gave me some of the worst news that I ever heard.

They told me that they were getting a divorce.

I was so hurt by what my parents told me, that I walked away from God.

I struggled with questions like, “Why doesn’t God keep my parents together? Why doesn’t God fix my parent’s marriage?”

Looking back, I see that it was wrong of me to do that because I had a flawed way of thinking.

I justified it by thinking that if God really loved me, then He wouldn’t let something as awful as my parents splitting up happen to my brother and I.

Through the years while I was away from God, I would often pass by a church.

Many times, a thought would come to my mind that I should go in there and speak to the pastor!

That was the Holy Spirit calling out to me trying to get my attention.

I had walked away from God, but God never walked away from me.

I don’t want you to make the same mistake that I made, and that’s why I’m writing this blog post.

2 Reasons Why Everyone Should Believe in God

So here are my reasons for why I believe everyone should believe in God.

1. Conscience

Everybody has one even if they choose to ignore it.

People of every race, every culture, male, and female, all over the world have a conscience.

Most believe at least a few basic truths; it’s wrong to kill, lying is wrong, cheating is wrong etc.

Does anyone honestly believe that we all inherited this “conscience” by chance?

Where did the conscience come from?

Since we all have a conscience, then there must be someone who set the standard for what’s wrong and what’s right.

Now some people will say that the moral standard is set by society.  They’ll say that the society sets the norms for what is right or wrong.

But if that were true, then that wouldn’t explain isolated tribes in the Amazon forest.

These tribes reveal the evidence of a conscience, as they have similar moral standards to the rest of the world about lying, murder, and theft.

However, they never had any influence from the outside world.

That’s why I believe that the conscience is evidence for why we should believe in God.

2. Love

All people want to be loved.

Whether you’re a man, woman, child, or adult, we all want to be loved.

That includes the tough guy, the guy always in trouble, and even that person that says that they don’t need anyone.

If they’re honest, even if it’s only with themselves, they’ll all admit that they have a desire to be loved just like the rest of us.

Why do you think that is? Why is there this universal need for all people to be loved?

Allow me to share a few Bible verses that explain why:

We’re created in the image of God Himself

“So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.”

-Genesis 1:27

We have the ability to love, and we desire love because God is love.  God birthed that love in us when He created us:

1 John 4:7 says, “Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God…”  And 1 John 4:19 says, “We love Him, because He first loved us.”

Now…before you throw this out the window, think about the implications of just these 3 verses above.

God, the Creator of Earth and heaven, decided to create us…and did so in His own image.

God IS love, love comes from God, therefore we also love and desire love.

We love God and those around us by extension because God first loved us. This is truly astounding!

true love believe in God

We Were All God’s Enemy

I said the fact that God loves us is astounding, and here’s why:

Did you know that every one of us were God’s enemy?  Some of us are still God’s enemy and here’s why:

We all sin.  To prove that, just answer these questions:

  1. Have you ever lied?
  2. Have you ever looked at someone with lust, sexually desiring them?
  3. Have you ever stolen something, even if it was just a pen, or a little of the companies’ time?

These are all sins, and it only takes one “yes” answer to one of these questions for us to be condemned.

And yet God’s own Word tells us that He loves us nevertheless.

So basically if you do not know the Lord as your Savior, you are God’s enemy. That’s a scary thought.

Hebrews 10:31 says, “It’s a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.”

But wait…we are (were) God’s enemy because of sin, yet He loves us still.

Therefore, it’s a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the Living God…IF you are not known by Him!

[Tweet “God loves us so much, that He sent His own Son to pay the price for our sins.”]

Our sins can be forgiven, and we can be given a new life through believing in Jesus Christ, and placing our trust in Him.

I’ll have a little more on this later on.

A Negative Reason To Believe in God

How do you live your life? Why do people take things like drugs, alcohol, sex, etc?

How about the workaholic?  Or the cheating spouse?  Why do they fill their lives with these work or extramarital affairs?

The reason is because deep within us all, there’s a craving for something bigger than us.

There’s a hole, and it’s a God sized hole. God put that craving there.

God-shaped whole in our hearts believe in god

But people try to satisfy themselves with other things like those I listed above, and so much more.

But the problem is that sex, drugs, alcohol, and anything else just don’t fill that hole.

When people are honest with themselves, they admit that the things that they’ve tried to fill themselves with just leave them empty.

People do all these things that are sometimes referred to as “self-medicating”. But the problem is that the medication doesn’t fit the need.

The alcoholic feels helpless to stop drinking.  At the end of the day, he still feels empty inside.

It’s the same for others as well who are looking for love, purpose, and the meaning of life in the wrong places.

Look in the news how many celebs are into drugs and alcohol. Then look and see how many have taken their own lives, or have died from doing these things.

They have money, power, fame, and the lifestyle they desire…yet they are not happy. Why?

Remember that God sized hole?

They’re trying to fill it with everything except God.

My Favorite Excuse Not To Believe in God

The number one excuse not to believe in God is this:

If God is real,

undefined

In my opinion, this is an excuse. It’s a self-serving excuse to disbelieve in God.

That excuse is powered by the need to NOT be accountable to God.  In other words, it’s an excuse to continue living a life filled with sin.

Many people who give this excuse aren’t willing to give up sleeping with their significant other, or aren’t willing to give up anything else that’s immoral.

Why does God allow suffering anyway?

I’m just a man, I don’t have all the answers.  But I can nonetheless give you some good reasons why God does allow suffering.

Reasons Why God Allows Suffering (in my opinion)

1.  God Suffered

God Himself, in the person of Jesus Christ, came to this world, and was tortured and killed with extreme cruelty that we may have forgiveness from our sins, and have a place in heaven with God.

Therefore, it stands to reason that if God being God decided in His wisdom to allow Himself to suffer…who are we not to suffer as well?

God willingly chose to suffer for our benefit…He did not have to.

After all, He is all-mighty God. Think about that.

2.  Sin

Everyone in this world sins.  The effect of sin is that we bring suffering on ourselves and on others.

3.  Advancement

Some of the greatest advancement of technology etc. in the world has come because of other people’s suffering.

4.  Faith

Many believers would tell you that the greatest increase in their faith in God has come during times of suffering.

Suffering through the consequences of one’s mistakes is often the best teacher.

A Few Last Thoughts

You may be thinking these are just my words, and you’re right, they are.

That being said, these words are my poor attempt at simply paraphrasing what you’ll find in God’s Word: the Bible.

No matter who you are, no matter what you have done, God loves you.

He loves you so much that He died for you, so that you can have freedom.

It's never to late to have a fresh start believe in god

Accepting Jesus gives you freedom.

[Tweet “You can be forgiven of your sins if you just ask God to forgive you.”]

Yes it really is that simple…we ask God to forgive us being truly sorry for our sin, and God in His gracious mercy grants us forgiveness.

We receive eternal life with God from God.

We can of ourselves do nothing to earn this or merit it. Salvation is a gift from God, and gifts are free or they’re not really gifts.

“For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.”

-Ephesians 2:8-9

All those who believe will inherit eternal life…Does that surprise you?

Those that trust and believe in Jesus will have eternal life with Him.  There’ll be no more pain, no more sin, and no more sorrow.

Those who don’t believe in Jesus will have eternal life as well…only that eternity will be spent in hell.

God sends no one to hell; in fact He desires that not one go to hell.

“The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering towards us, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.”

-2 Peter 3:9

However, there’ll be only two groups of people at the end standing before the Lord Jesus:

1.  Those that in life said, “Thy will be done…”, they will spend eternity in heaven with God

2.  Those that in life said, “My will be done…”, they will spend eternity in hell.

Our own life choices decide where we will spend eternity; God will honor those choices.

I’m not saying people choose to go to hell, that’s preposterous…no one in their right mind would choose that.

What I’m saying is that choosing to live for yourself, and walk away from God is choosing hell by default.

This would be like standing before the judge after having been caught for armed robbery.  The judge sentences you to prison…and you say, “But I did not choose prison.”

Yes actually you did when you chose to commit the robbery.

Are You Ready To Accept Jesus?

Pray this simple prayer:

Father God, I know I have sinned, please forgive me my sins, and I am truly sorry.

I accept Jesus as my Lord and Savior; I place my trust and faith in Him alone for my salvation.

I believe that Jesus died for my sins on the cross, rose from the dead, and is even now with God in heaven.

Lord I welcome you into my heart and pray that you will change me; that your Holy Spirit will live within me.

In Jesus name I pray, Amen.

Welcome to the family of God!

  1. Thank you for this great blog post Greg! Thank you for sharing with us about your childhood and about how you decided to walk away from God. It never fails to amaze me how faithful God is in bringing us back to Him, the way that he did with you as well as with me.

I also really enjoyed how you wrote about why you believe that God exists because of everyone’s desire to be loved. I’ve never heard of that before and I have to say that it’s very unique and intriguing.

    1. Thank you Peter for the chance to once again write a guest post for your site. You are as always encouraging and a blessing. 🙂

God is faithful…even when we are faithless. We can turn away from Him but we are never far from His eye regardless of what we do. It is never too late to turn back to God, some think that they will not be accepted once more by God because they did A or B. Just the fact that someone worries that God will not receive them back again tells me that person has little to worry about if their heart truly desires God once more. The ones in serious danger are those who never have these thoughts at all as their conscience’s are seared. God is amazing!

I don’t know that God exists because we need love, but more that love is a real and very genuine reason to believe in God. Think about this a moment: love. What is it? Let’s for a moment break God down into one basic idea…because we cannot think on His level and speak in the spiritual realm rather we are confined to this realm in general anyway.

What is one of the most defining characteristics of God? Love is the biggest I would say. Why was the Bible written – love. God did not cause it to be written for His sake, it was for ours. Why did Christ come to earth? Love – for us.

Look back on the Old Testament: all the things that Israel did, all the times that God punished them…and stopped said punishment and “reinstated” Israel…why? Love for His people.

Even negative things…no one enjoys being punished period. But I ask you – why would an all powerful God punish people? Because He is mean and cruel as some say? Sadistic???

No…God punishes people for the same reason we would punish our children. We care about our children so we attempt to show them the errors of their ways and set them on a good and productive path. Well – God loves us and does the same things for us!

Why is God called God the Father? Because He is Jesus Father? Yes but there is more to it than that. If we believe in Jesus, than God the Father is also OUR Father.

We should not think of God as just someone we know thereby disrespecting Him. Yet if people looked in the simplest of terms at God as their Father…it would help because He is.

Yes God is set apart and to be worshiped, loved, even feared in a healthy a way. Still, in the most basic human terms…God is no different that the loving parents towards their child. The difference is that He is God and always knows best. Parents can make many mistakes even being loving…God does not even if we think so…He is God.

Well now that I have written you another post ha ha…seriously I had no intention of this being this long! It just flowed out of me. 🙂

      Blessings brother
      Greg
